Destiny Bethune

My Story

My name is Destiny Bethune, and I am a 28-year-old entrepreneur and mother of two wonderful children, Destin and Sophie, who play a vital role in our family business. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University, where I graduated in May 2019. While attending college, I gained valuable experience working in mental health with youth at the Children’s Methodist Home in Ruston, Louisiana.

In January 2021, I began my career in law enforcement, which was an enriching experience. However, I soon recognized that my true calling extended beyond the confines of a correctional facility in Shreveport. I felt a deep desire to contribute to the community in a more meaningful way, which brings us to my current endeavors.

My Journey as a Swim Instructor

I have been passionate about swimming since the age of two. At five, I began formal swimming lessons with my kindergarten P.E. teacher, Ms. Helen Killen, who provided instruction from her backyard. This foundation propelled my growth as a swimmer, leading my parents to enroll me in swim school at seven, where I mastered various strokes. By age eight, I was competing in swimming events until around thirteen, when personal challenges began to distract me from my passion.

At sixteen, I landed my first job as a lifeguard. On my very first day, my manager unexpectedly asked me to teach swimming lessons to six children aged six to eight. Although I had not been formally trained, I accepted the challenge, embracing the opportunity with enthusiasm. I quickly discovered my love for teaching, and one of my students even gifted me a piggy bank shaped like a lifeguard—a cherished keepsake I still have today.

The Birth of Destined to Swim

During the challenging year of 2020, I faced significant job loss and struggled to find new opportunities. It was during this time that I returned to my roots—swimming—and established Destined to Swim, built on unwavering faith (Hebrews 11:1). I realized that my gift lies in sharing knowledge that can empower others, potentially saving lives. Despite moments of disobedience and distraction, I have come to understand the importance of following the path that has been laid out for me.

Building Trust and Connection:

I hope this message has fostered a sense of trust in my business and mission.

Closing Reflection:

I would like to leave you with a personal mantra:

“Swimming is where I can save the most people.

Swimming is where I can help the most people.

Swimming is where I smile. Swimming is where I feel free.

I want others to feel like me.

I want others to be free.

Swimming has always been peace.

“The Pool” has always been the place to be.

Swimming has always been my therapy.”

Thank you for considering my journey. I look forward to the opportunity to work together.

Sincerely,

Destiny Bethune
